The history of
The Schafhof has a centuries-old history, which is closely connected with the local history of Kronberg.
In the Middle Ages, initially a Fronhof, in the 17th century nearly 2000 sheep grazed on the extensive grounds in the Taunus. From this, the name "Schafhof", which has been preserved until today, was derived.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the sheep farming was terminated by the ducal Nassau domain administration for economic reasons. As a result, the farm changed hands several times and in 1899 the Schafhof was finally sold to the Frankfurt St. Katharinen and Weißfrauenstift.
Until the farm was leased by Liselott Linsenhoff in 1970 and developed into an internationally recognized equestrian facility, the Schafhof served – among other things - as a school camp and was used as an agricultural business for pig farming, pork- and calf-breeding.
After the death of her mother, Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff took over the 24-hectare farm in 2000. Since then, dressage horses have been bred and trained here in the Taunus by the Olympic champion from 1988, her husband Klaus-Martin Rath and her step-son Matthias Alexander Rath.
On special occasions, the Schafhof traditionally opens its doors to interested visitors. For example, three European championships have been held at Schafhof and for decades the so called Sichtungsturnier, which is very important for dressage young riders and juniors, has been held each year to qualify for the Preis der Besten in Warendorf on the dressage arena amidst the picturesque Schafhof gardens.Since 2016, the Gestüt Schafhof now also has an independent stallion station. In 2018, a breeding day will be held for the third time on March 24, including a presentation of our own stallions, giving breeders from around the world the opportunity to learn about the excellent sires of the dressage sport who have their home on Schafhof. Furthermore for the first time, a foal show will take place on Schafhof on the 7th of June 2018.
